"The formation of an artist is the formation of free human person, a person with the highest values of the human spirit." José Antonio Abreu
I am a professional cellist holding Graduate Performance Diploma, Master of Music Education and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from prestigious Moscow Conservatory and Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
I have over 20 years of teaching experience and zest for sharing my passion to classical music. Well acquainted with different methods of teaching, I hold a strong believe that music can change lives for the better. I seek to equip my students with the performance and music theory skills that will see them excel no matter which path they take. An engaged and determined teacher, I thrive in both one-on-one and in group settings.
Highlights of my teaching experience include educational program for kindergarten and K-12 students "Music Around the World", master classes and workshops for students from 4 years old through college age.
I was born in Russia where I received most of my formal education. I moved to the US in 2003 after I received a full scholarship to study at the Peabody Institute. In 2010 I became an American citizen and moved to Maryland in 2012. I feel very fortunate to be a classical musician. I have been able to visit many different countries around the world, meet and collaborate with many wonderful musicians, learn the best from breathtakingly versatile and complex cultures, and share my experiences with my audience and my students. As a member of Music Teachers National Association, I have many students successfully performed in different competitions, All-County and All-State orchestras.
Private lessons are the best way for anyone to learn how to play an instrument. The one-on-one lesson means that students are given instruction that best suits how they, as individuals, learn. They enable students to learn the type of music in which they personally are most interested. Also with private lessons a teacher can focus all attention on a student to ensure that things such as hand positioning, posture or understanding of a particular concept are correct.
I teach students of all ages from beginners to very advanced. Students are given an opportunity to perform in recitals held over the course of the year.
Stop looking! Dr. Kozlov is that person!!! Not only have you found a very gifted and talented Cellist, but a very gifted instructor, mentor and inspirer. I cannot say enough about our beloved instructor. He has given lessons to our teenage son for 5 years. We wish it could have been much longer. It is very hard to put into words Maxim’s commitment, love for music and passion for his students.
Dr. Kozlov is down to earth, despite his impressive academic and professional background, and apt to explain music in an accessible and fun way. Instead of simply telling me to emphasize certain notes or merely demonstrating, he told me to make those notes “sparkle like diamonds!” The imagery immediately helped me understand what needs to be different in the quality of sound.
